Construction
The UniRing® was first conceived in 1998 by Dr William Northrup, a leading US cardiac surgeon. The aim of the design was to avoid the unwanted plication which may take place when flexible rings are implanted and at the same time to maintain the shape of the valve anatomy. It is known that the valve anatomy changes during the systole and diastole phases and it is therefore important to have an annuloplasty ring that allows the valve to adopt its natural shape during throughout the cycle.
The first post-implantation results already show a bi-dimensional flexibility and more particularly in the systolic phase the respect of aorto-mitral movement.
The first case of this ring model took place in 2004 at the University of Limoges , undertaken by Professor Marc Laskar.
The first UniRing® implantation took place in April 2007 and was carried out by Dr Northrup.
Dr Northrup collaborated with Peters Surgical to produce the UniRing because of the company’s 30 years of experience in cardiac surgery, specifically with sutures and more particularly in mitral valve surgery with Cardioflon®, Cardionyl® and Cardioxyl®. The combined knowledge of Dr Northrup and Peters was an ideal partnership to enable the UniRing to be put into production.
UniRingâ is a universal annuloplasty ring adapted to both Mitral and Tricuspid valves owing to its three-dimensional shape and segmented rigidity.
UNIRINGâ - GENERAL INFORMATION

The UniRing has a unique and highly innovative design that makes it the only universal, one-size-fits-all, annuloplasty ring in the world. Its uniqueness comes from the fact that rather than being a single ring it is made up of 15 rigid platforms which are linked together to allow total three-dimensional flexibility. This means that it is able to exactly follow the natural movement of the heart.
It is made with fifteen rigid oval suture-platforms (5.5 mm. length x 3.0 mm. width x 1.2 mm. thickness) in sequence, each with 2 suture-holes 3.0 mm. apart in sequence. The suture-platforms are Injection-moulded from polyester and impregnated with bismuth for radio-opacity.

Polyester thread is braided over the platforms leaving 2.0 mm. flexible joints between platforms. The polyester joints are heat-sealed to prevent fraying of the polyester thread when unused suture-platforms are cut away.
